Add Some Color

On Thursday, March 28th, Nisswa Garden Club will gather to hear Master Gardener Jennifer Knutson present “Color with Flowering Shrubs.” Check-in starts at noon with lunch following at 12:30 and the presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m. If interested in lunch, reservations must be made by contacting Barb Bogdanovich at (218) 330-6661.

On Thursday, April 11th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Gardeners’ Night Out will once again take place at Main Street Ale House in Nisswa. University of Minnesota Extension Educator Jackie Froemming will present “Vegetables for Everyone.” This presentation will offer information about growing vegetables and include “make and take” paper pots.

39 Days

There are 39 more days until Run for the Lakes in Nisswa. That means there is plenty of time to register and prep for a race. I know I will need to get some runs in because my snow boots definitely have more wear right now than my running shoes.

The Kids Fun Run and 5K Run/Walk will take place Friday, April 26th. On Saturday, April 27th, the full, half and relay marathons will take place, along with the 10K and Zer0K.

Freaky Friday

Not sure how to spend your Friday night? Head to Mount Ski Gull for their last Freaky Friday Tubing event of the season. From 6-8 p.m., this Friday, March 15th, tubers can enjoy a couple hours under the stars with lights and music. Tickets have been known to sell out early, so purchase your tickets in advance here. Cost is $18 per person.

Ski Gull is also having Flannel Friday! Enjoy 15% off lift tickets, rental and tubing if you wear flannel (Freaky Friday Tubing is excluded from this discount). Take advantage of these great specials before the season ends.

Luck of the Irish

If you’ve been to Crosslake on St. Patrick’s Day, you know it’s not an event people like to miss. Each year, Crosslake hosts thousands of people who are geared up for the weekend and ready to celebrate in their green apparel. This year, the festivities will kick off Friday, March 15th, with the Lucky Leprechaun Chase to find the Pot ‘O Gold (first clue to be released at 3 p.m.). Friday evening will include both trivia and music at Moonlite Bay Family Restaurant & Bar and live music at The Bourbon Room.

Saturday will be filled to the brim with things to do, so be sure to click here for a full list of events. The day will begin with Crosslake Firefighter’s Pancake Breakfast and The Clover Dash 5K. A vendor fair at Whitefish Lodge and Suites will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will fill the streets at 2 p.m. It’s a day that is sure to be entertaining for the whole family, so gather your green gear and get ready for a fun weekend!

Get Ready to Hop

No, you won’t actually hop (unless you want to), but you will get to go from pub to pub in Crosslake for the 7th annual St. Urho’s Grasshopper Hop event. On Saturday, March 9th, beginning at 11:30 a.m., area establishments invite you to take part in their fun-filled “test your skills” events. If you have skills, you may just go home with a prize or two!

To participate, just head to one of the pubs below by 11:30 a.m. to register and start your hop. Cost is $20 to cover the shuttle fee, which will run from noon to 4:30 p.m. St. Urho’s attire is encouraged (green and purple) and you won’t want to forget a St. Patrick’s Day Blinkie Button for access to specials throughout Crosslake. Sushi Demonstration

Do you enjoy sushi or curious about how it’s prepared? Join Chef Matt Annand and Sherwood Forest’s Head Chef James Blahut. They will demonstrate how to make sushi and you’ll have the opportunity to taste the delicious delicacy.

The class is scheduled for Wednesday, March 6th from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $25 per person and registration can be found here. The class is limited, so don’t delay reserving a spot.

Clover Dash

It won’t be long and the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration will take over Crosslake. This also means that the Clover Dash 5K is on its way too. On March 16th at 9:30 a.m., runners and walkers will take off on the 3.1-mile trek that begins and ends in Crosslake’s Town Square. There is even a shorter race for interested youth. The awards ceremony will begin shortly after at 10:30 a.m.

If you’re interested in lacing up (and bundling up) for the 5K , click here and receive a discounted price. If you’d rather register in person, head to Crosslake’s Whitefish Lodge and Suites from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 15th. You may also pick up your participant packet at this time. If you typically fly by the seat of your pants like me, you can even register the morning of from 7:45-9 a.m. at the Lodge. Whitefish Lodge and Suites is located kiddy corner from Town Square.

Literacy in the Garden

On Thursday, February 28th, Nisswa Garden Club will gather to hear author Roseanne Blass’s program, “Cultivating a Child’s Imagination: Children’s Literacy in the Garden.” Check-in starts at noon and lunch begins at 12:30, with the program to follow at 1:30 p.m. For lunch reservations, contact Barb Bogdanovich at (218) 330-6661.

Chilly Dip

It’s that time of year again, when supporters of Special Olympics Minnesota jump into frigid waters for the annual statewide Polar Plunge. This event is presented by Minnesota Law Enforcement and funds raised will help over 8,200 Minnesotan athletes who participate in Special Olympic programs.

On Saturday, March 2nd, jumpers and supporting spectators will gather within the gates of Breezy Point Resort on Pelican Lake. Check-in takes place at 10:30 a.m., with the plunge starting at 1 p.m. Fundraising is required to jump (minimum of $75) and registration can be found here. Spectating is free, so come cheer on those braving the icy waters!
