Opposites Attract

First off, Happy Valentine’s Day from This Is the Lakes Area! I have to be honest, I hesitated today in regard to posting about the upcoming Greater Lakes Area Performing Arts (GLAPA) production of The Addams Family. I thought it seemed a little “dark” for Valentine’s Day, but I changed my mind after reading the plot; there is a love story after all.

Synopsis taken from the GLAPA website:
“America’s darkest family comes to life in this delightful, family-friendly musical about love, family, honesty, and growing up. The Addams Family features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family–and she begs her father not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.”

The Addam’s Family production is sponsored by Essentia Health and all shows take place at Pequot Lakes High School Auditorium. Be sure to mark your calendars with the following showtimes:

Friday, February 22nd at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, February 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, February 24th at 2 p.m.
Friday, March 1st at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 2nd at 2 p.m.
Sunday, March 3rd at 2 p.m.
* show is approximately 2 hours long

Winter Jubilee, Oh My!

I don’t know about you, but the word jubilee makes me smile, which seems appropriate as Nisswa is having their Winter Jubilee this weekend, February 15th-17th. This annual event is a popular one and provides fun for the whole family.

The event kicks off Friday with several restaurants in downtown Nisswa offering specials and later live music will entertain those at Ye Old Pickle Factory. Area businesses will also offer several specials and discounts throughout the weekend.

Saturday is jam-packed with things to do, including (but definitely not limited to) a snow sculpture contest, a parade, an opportunity for smoosh racing, a wood splitting contest and more! A few of these events require pre-registration, so visit the link below for more details.

Sunday will wrap up the fun weekend with an ice fishing derby, bingo and live music. For a full list of events, click here or call Ye Old Pickle Factory at (218) 963-0085 with any questions.

Not Your Typical Yard

If you live in the Pequot Lakes area, you’ve most likely heard about the indoor sports facility being constructed south of Tasty Pizza North. If not, the area will welcome The YARD (Young Athletes Reaching Dreams) in the near future, a climate-controlled baseball and softball training facility. The Yard will feature two batting cages, ample open field turf for training/practices and even talk of a coffee shop. Baseball and softball aren’t the only sports The YARD will accommodate. The facility will also include a pickleball court and possibly additional sports down the line.

Want to stay updated on The YARD’s progress? Check out their Facebook page here or visit their website here. What an exciting addition to Pequot Lakes!
